We’ve been struck lately by the power of polyphenols. Polyphenols are phytochemicals that give plants their distinctive colors and provide protection from UV damage, pests, and infections. Their antioxidant content is off the charts, and are found in high concentrations in dark fruits like blueberries, pomegranate, cherries, and in tea, red wine, and cocoa.
Good news for chocolate lovers! Polyphenols in cocoa occur in higher concentration than any other food, and have antioxidant activity much greater than that of broccoli or red wine. The polyphenols in cocoa seem to have a special affinity for the cardiovascular system, acting in a number of ways to support cardiovascular health.
