It’s been almost four years now since I took that excruciating, long-contemplated, often second-guessed, talk-myself out of it, short walk to the drive-way to join the ranks of the couch to 5K movement. Never mind the fact that my heavy all cotton running attire weighed almost as much as what I had gained since the last time I laced up my shoes. This time it was going to be different. I was going to do it.
The first few weeks were solid, building up to 5 minutes of walking followed by one minute of running. It was so exhilarating that I even thought about my need to have a big carbo-load pasta dinner the night before building up to 5 ½ minutes of walking followed by 90 seconds of running. Okay, so calling what I was doing actually being running might be a bit of a stretch. It was more of a fast walk or a slow jog. It didn’t matter, I was out there doing it.
My greatest triumph came the first time I made it all the way up the long steep hill that leads along our road back to our cabin holding to a light jog. For months I would always end my walk-runs at the bottom of the hill and walk back to the house. That day was different. I recall so vividly thinking about Jesus carrying the cross up the hill that would signify his death, and my life. I intently thought with each step that this hill is nothing in comparison to what He went through.
Fast forward a few years and I have now run up many hills, logged thousands of miles, and run in races of various long distances. Yes, my activity has come a long way since I first took that long step off the couch. The fact is, I can’t take credit for taking that first step, and certainly did not climb that hill alone. And if you ever want to come over to run that hill in rural Ohio County, Kentucky, the home of the father of Bluegrass Music Bill Monroe, you are welcome. It has been appropriately named Calvary Hill and I run it now 4-6 times a week, always with Him. What is your hill? He will carry you through it!
Tune in this week for more from the C.R.E.A.T.I.O.N. Health Discovery and ACTIVITY.
